The French Basque Country is a little over two hours south of Bordeaux: far enough to feel like another country, close enough to enjoy in a single day. Atlantic rollers, red-and-white timbered villages, the elegant seafront of Biarritz — this is the classic “big day out” from Bordeaux. And because it is a long day, being driven changes everything: no motorway tolls to work out, no unfamiliar road signs, no circling for a parking space in a packed seaside town in August.
Biarritz, elegance on the ocean
Once the summer retreat of European royalty, Biarritz is still the postcard image of the Basque coast: the Rocher de la Vierge, a rock topped by a white statue of the Virgin and reached by a footbridge, the sweeping Grande Plage, and a lighthouse with 248 steps (73 m above the sea — the view is worth the climb). Add a well-regarded aquarium and one of the birthplaces of European surfing, and you can easily fill half a day here.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the bay and the harbour
A few minutes further south, Saint-Jean-de-Luz is built around a working fishing harbour and a bay sheltered by breakwaters — which means no waves and no currents, ideal if you are travelling with young children. Its old town has real history: it was here, in the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, that Louis XIV married the Spanish Infanta Maria Theresa on 9 June 1660, sealing peace between France and Spain. Shopping streets, shipowners’ houses and a seafront promenade complete the picture.
Espelette, the village of peppers
No visit to the Basque Country is complete without Espelette, famous for its protected-origin chilli pepper and its white houses with blood-red timbers, where strings of drying peppers hang from the façades in late summer. A short stop, but one of the most photographed villages in France.
Bayonne, the historic Basque capital
Worth a stop on the way home, Bayonne has a Gothic cathedral and cloister, old ramparts and the colourful lanes of Petit Bayonne. It is also a food town: Bayonne ham, of course, but above all chocolate. The city claims the title of France’s first chocolate-making city — Jewish artisans fleeing Spain and Portugal set up the country’s earliest cocoa workshops here in the 17th century, and the word “chocolat” appears in the municipal archives as early as 1670.

The Spanish border is only about 15 km beyond Saint-Jean-de-Luz, so San Sebastián can be added as an extended-day option. Mention it when you request your quote and we will price it accordingly.
