From Bordeaux, the Basque coast fits into a single day. It’s 2 hr 15 of driving to Biarritz, fifteen minutes more to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and 2 hr 35 to San Sebastián once you’ve crossed the border. The distance isn’t really the question. What changes everything is what the driver does once you’ve arrived.
There are two ways to book, and they don’t cost the same because they don’t tie up the car in the same way. A one-way transfer drops you off and the driver leaves. With a chauffeur at your disposal, the car and the driver stay with you for the whole booked period. Here’s how to choose before you ask for a price.

Two services that work very differently
The one-way transfer: a pick-up, a drop-off
You give us a pick-up address and a drop-off address. The driver takes you there, unloads the luggage, and that’s where the job ends. It’s the most common booking towards the Basque coast: one journey, one firm price, known before you leave. It suits you as soon as you no longer need a car on arrival, or your return falls on another day.
A chauffeur at your disposal: the car stays with you
The driver stays with you for a period booked in advance, half a day or a full day. He waits during your visits, your meetings, your stops, and sets off again when you get back in. Your things stay in the boot from one stop to the next. We explain how this works in our article on hiring a private driver for the day.
The line between the two is easy to remember. On a return booking, waiting time on site is included up to one hour. Beyond that, the driver is tied up for you, and the booking becomes an hourly hire.
What the journey actually involves
| Destination | Distance from central Bordeaux | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Bayonne | ≈ 185 km | 2 hr 05 |
| Biarritz | ≈ 198 km | 2 hr 15 |
| Saint-Jean-de-Luz | ≈ 205 km | 2 hr 15 |
| Hendaye | ≈ 220 km | 2 hr 25 |
| San Sebastián | ≈ 238 km | 2 hr 35 |
Distances and times calculated by road routing from central Bordeaux, outside heavy traffic, and to be adjusted to your exact address. The route takes the A63 motorway south, a toll road from the Landes onwards. In high season and on changeover weekends, check the forecasts from Bison Futé or the live traffic from Vinci Autoroutes before fixing your departure time.
One thing stands out in that table: the five destinations sit very close to each other. Bayonne to Saint-Jean-de-Luz is twenty minutes. That’s exactly what makes an at-disposal booking worth it as soon as you want to see more than one.
When a one-way transfer is enough
You’re staying several days
This is the most common case. A holiday rental in Bidart, a hotel in Biarritz, a family house in Guéthary: you travel down with your suitcases and you don’t need a car once you’ve settled in. One transfer on arrival day, one on departure day, two separate journeys.
Your luggage doesn’t travel well by train
Surfboards, golf bags, a pushchair, bulky sports gear. Trains impose formats and handling on the platform. The boot of a minivan (5 passengers) or an 8-seater van solves it, provided you tell us the real volume when booking. The vehicle is chosen on luggage as much as on passenger numbers.
Your connection has fallen through
A missed flight at Mérignac, a cancelled train at Bordeaux Saint-Jean, and you still need to be on the Basque coast that evening. A direct one-way transfer becomes the simplest answer, door to door, without waiting for the next service. We pick up from Bordeaux Saint-Jean station, Bordeaux-Mérignac airport or your address.
When a driver at your disposal makes more sense
Several stops in the same day
Biarritz in the morning, Saint-Jean-de-Luz for lunch, Espelette in the afternoon. With separate transfers you pay for each leg and wait for the car every time. With a driver at your disposal, the car stays available all day and the plan can change as you go. If that’s your idea, read our guide to a Basque Country day trip from Bordeaux, which sets out the stops and the order to take them in.
Parking in summer
From June to September, parking in Biarritz or Saint-Jean-de-Luz eats into your day, and the old town of San Sebastián is best seen on foot. You’re dropped at the door and picked up at the door. That’s often what decides it for families with small children, where every metre of car park counts.
A business day on the coast
Two meetings in Bayonne and a third in Anglet, with a return time to keep. The driver waits during the meetings, your files stay in the car, and you never have to work out how to get from one address to the next.
Crossing into Spain to San Sebastián
San Sebastián, Donostia in Basque, is 238 km from Bordeaux, about forty kilometres past Hendaye. The border is crossed without stopping, but every passenger must carry valid photo ID, children included. We run this journey in both directions, as a one-way transfer or with the driver at your disposal.
One point is worth planning for: a day in San Sebastián from Bordeaux means more than five hours of driving for the chauffeur, on top of your own time there. It’s a long commitment, booked well ahead, and priced on hours rather than kilometres. For opening times and practical details, the city publishes its own information on donostia.eus.
On the French side, the tourist offices of Biarritz and of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure keep access and opening hours up to date. If you’re flying in rather than driving down, our page on the private chauffeur at Biarritz airport covers local transfers.
How the price is set
The Basque coast sits outside our fixed-rate area, which covers Bordeaux, Arcachon Bay and Cap Ferret. These journeys are therefore quoted individually, on your exact route. Three things to know:
- The price is given before you book and it doesn’t move afterwards. No meter, no surcharge for traffic.
- The fare covers the driver, the vehicle, the fuel, the tolls and help with your bags. Nothing hidden on arrival.
- An at-disposal booking is priced on duration and on the vehicle, not on mileage. Our published rates cover the Bordeaux area and the bay. For the Basque coast, send us your plan for the day and we’ll turn it into a single figure.
On vehicles, we run an SUV, a minivan (5 passengers) and an 8-seater van. Two booster seats are available, to be requested when booking with the children’s ages.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the real difference between a transfer and an at-disposal booking?
On a transfer, the driver leaves once he’s dropped you off. At your disposal, he stays with you for the booked period and follows you from stop to stop. The first is priced per journey, the second on time.
How long does Bordeaux to San Sebastián take?
Around 2 hr 35 for 238 kilometres from central Bordeaux, outside heavy traffic. Allow extra in July and August on the A63.
Do I need a passport for San Sebastián?
A valid national identity card or passport is enough, for every passenger, children included. Check the expiry dates before you travel.
Can the driver wait while we have lunch?
On a return booking, waiting on site is included up to one hour. Beyond that we switch to an at-disposal booking, which often works out cheaper than two separate journeys with an empty run back.
Can you pick up from Bordeaux-Mérignac airport or Saint-Jean station?
Yes, and that’s the most common request. Give us your flight or train number and we set the pick-up time around it.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can. A day to the Basque Country or into Spain ties up one driver and one car for a full day, and those slots go quickly in season.
