You land at Bordeaux-Mérignac in the early evening. Four people, five suitcases, and a holiday rental or campsite somewhere in the Périgord, the Landes or along the Atlantic coast. The flight was the easy part. The last leg is the one that goes wrong.
Holiday accommodation in south-west France is rarely near a station, and almost never near the airport. Public transport thins out exactly when you need it — in the evening, at weekends, and in the villages where the good places are. This guide covers the real road distances from Bordeaux airport, how long each drive actually takes, and what to settle before you fly.
Real distances from Bordeaux airport
These are measured road itineraries, not straight-line distances. Times are outside of traffic; add time for a Saturday in July or August, when the coast road is at its busiest.

One line in that table is worth pausing on. Lacanau-Océan is 14 km closer than Arcachon, and takes longer to reach. Arcachon is served by a dual carriageway most of the way; Lacanau is reached on smaller roads through the forest. Distance is a poor guide to drive time here, which is why booking a transfer on the basis of “it looks close on the map” tends to end badly.
The same applies further inland: Périgueux is 18 km further than Bergerac but only a few minutes longer, while Sarlat — the deepest point in the Périgord Noir — is a genuine two-and-three-quarter-hour drive. Why the last leg is the difficult one
Three things catch travellers out on arrival:
- Your accommodation is not in the village centre. Campsites and rural rentals sit several kilometres outside the nearest town, often down an unnamed lane. A taxi rank at a station 30 km away does not solve that.
- Evening arrivals. Regional connections reduce sharply after 7 pm, and reception desks close. A transfer that takes two hours needs to start when you land, not after a two-hour wait.
- Luggage volume is different on holiday. A family arriving for two weeks travels with far more than a business traveller — pushchairs, beach equipment, sometimes a folding cot. Vehicle capacity has to be agreed in advance, not discovered in the car park.
Luggage and group size
This is the single most useful thing to settle before you fly. We operate a SUV as the standard vehicle, with a van and a 7-seater available on request. Which one you need depends on people and bags, and the second number is the one usually forgotten.
When you enquire, give us three figures: how many adults, how many children, and how many large suitcases. If you are travelling with bulky equipment — surfboards, golf bags, a cot — say so at that point. It changes which vehicle we send, and it is far easier to arrange a week ahead than on the day. What to send us before you fly
A transfer to a rural address needs more information than a city drop-off. Five things:

- The full address of the accommodation, with the postcode, plus the name of the property as it appears on your booking. Rural place names repeat across départements.
- GPS coordinates if you have them. Booking confirmations often include them. For an isolated property they are worth more than the address.
- A mobile number reachable on landing, ideally one that works on roaming.
- Your return journey, booked at the same time. It is the leg people forget, and the hardest to arrange at short notice from a village in mid-August.
The return: earlier than you think
Coming back, the drive time above is only part of the calculation. We advise allowing 2 to 2 h 30 at the airport before departure for flights within France and Europe, and 3 hours for destinations outside Europe — check your airline’s own guidance as well, since it varies.
Work backwards from that. A 10 am flight, from an address near Sarlat, means a pick-up at around 4:30 am. That is not a comfortable morning, but it is the arithmetic — and it is the reason we ask for return details in advance rather than the night before. Transfers run at any hour, including well before dawn.
Coast, inland, or a bit of both

During the stay itself, a car is not always necessary. Families often keep the transfer for the two long journeys — arrival and departure — and arrange one or two day trips in between, rather than renting a vehicle that sits at the campsite for a fortnight.

Can you collect us from a campsite reception rather than an address?
Yes. Give us the name of the site and the reception’s location; for large sites we agree a specific meeting point in advance, because pitch numbers are not usable as a pick-up point.
What happens if our flight is delayed?
We track the flight number and adjust the pick-up. That is precisely why we ask for the number rather than the scheduled time.
Can we book the outward and return legs together?
Yes, and we recommend it. Return legs at dawn in high season are the hardest to arrange late.
